Juneteenth 2026 is approaching, and millions of Americans are preparing to observe the holiday, which will combine with Saturday and Sunday to create a long weekend. This day is not only a break for workers, as government offices will also suspend operations. If you need to complete a banking transaction or send a package, here’s what you need to know about bank and post office closures so you can plan ahead.

Juneteenth is celebrated every year on June 19, and in 2026 it falls on a Friday.

Will banks be open on Juneteenth 2026?

Most branches of the nation’s major banks will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Financial institutions such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and CitiBank will suspend in-person services at many of their locations during the federal holiday.

Although physical branches will not operate as usual, customers will still be able to use digital services, mobile apps, ATMs, and online banking platforms to carry out a variety of transactions.

Will there be mail service on Juneteenth 2026?

The United States Postal Service will not provide regular residential or business mail delivery on Juneteenth. In addition, post offices will be closed for retail services and customer transactions. However, Priority Mail Express service will remain available, as it operates year-round, including on federal holidays.

Meanwhile, private shipping companies will continue their operations. Both UPS and FedEx will offer pickup and delivery services on June 19. UPS Store locations and FedEx Office centers will also remain open, although hours may vary by location.

What is Juneteenth?

June 19 marks the end of slavery in the United States, a date known as Juneteenth. While President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, during the Civil War, not all states complied immediately.

Texas, one of eleven slaveholding states, ignored the decree for nearly three years. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Union General Gordon Granger arrived at the port of Galveston, Texas, to officially announce the end of the war and that all enslaved people were free. Since then, the date has become a symbol of freedom and justice.

If June 19 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on Friday; if it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on Monday. Today, Juneteenth is both a day of reflection and a celebration that honors the resilience and struggle of the African American community.

The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of the words “June” and “nineteenth,” the date on which it is commemorated.

How is Juneteenth celebrated?
